The camping costs us around four hours a day: two hours setting up and heating and two hours pulling down on top of breakfast and dressing. Temperatures of around –40 degrees make even the simplest tasks, like packing the sled or zipping up a jacket, epic toils. Eric is still insisting that we take five breaks a day. If I had my way, there would only be two. ’ We plod along. Eric, Jose and Clark are quite happy with our progress. They say polar expeditions are notoriously slow. I am spending a lot of time replaying my life in my mind, from when I was a little kid through to the present.
I stay close to him. Clark and Jose are in the rear. We all drag our kayaks, which are laden with tents and other equipment and supplies. It’s gruelling. We pull them over shifting ice, and up and over pressure ridges, and use them to ford breaks in the ice. We stumble, fall, bang our bodies against the ice. We keep going, taking breaks every two hours or so when Eric decrees. Around 4 or 5 pm we stop and pitch camp. Climbing into our warm tent, out of the freezing temperatures, the icy, driving wind and the glare of the sun is the best part of each day.
We stand around watching. The pain in my hands is almost unbearable. I feel we are wasting too much time having breaks through the day. We had five today. They make us cold and cost us valuable kilo metres, but Eric is not happy making changes to the routine he has always followed. We sighted more polar bear tracks. ’ Each day feels like Groundhog Day, but I have to believe that we can make better progress. This trek is tough on our equipment and even tougher on our spirits, but I will not give up, I will push on, I will win.
